for chuck. >> and the big premier tonight. >> did mitt romney have a better wednesday than super tuesday? as the political world wakes up? it's clear mitt romney did well thanks to 12,000 votes in ohio. like all romney victories this year, it comes with a caveat. as santorum takes a stronger claim as the conservative alternative. despite all the results, all the new delegates, the story is the same, romney has a perception problem. santorum has a math problem. and as for paul and gingrich, they simply have a candidate credibility problem. and president obama doesn't sit super tuesday out. his first 2012 press conference includes a sharp rebuke of the republican candidates that he says are beating the drums of war when it comes to iran. it's wednesday, the day after, march 7th, 2012. this is the daily rundown. super tuesday is behind us. let's get to the first reads of the morning. mitt romney won the raw popular vote. he won states in five time zones, and still, all that comes with a but. romney continues to struggle with the same parts of the party he struggled with the entire campaign.

. but our decision desk tells us vermont and virginia are too close to call. and, get this, mitt romney is in a tight race with ron paul in each of those states. of course, rick santorum and newt gingrich didn't even qualify for the virginia primary so it was just romney and paul on the ballot. our exit polls show mitt romney is generally winning among voters who say their top concern is the economy but not everywhere. and rick santorum is leading among voters who say they want a candidate with a strong moral character. but that's also not across the board. much more on the exit polls in just a moment. again, fox news now projects newt gingrich has won his former home state of georgia. 419 delegates up for grabs across 10 super tuesday states tonight. that's more than the total that need to win the nomination. less than a half hour away from the polls closing in the biggest race of the night in the state of ohio. so stay tuned. first, to campaign carl cammeron live at romney headquarters in boston. carl, what are we learning from the early returns? >> well, we see from georgia that newt

! ♪ >>> so if you believe the latest polls mitt romney is going to easily win tomorrow's illinois gop primary. look at this. rasmussen, rommy at 41 santorum at 32. there's a lot of polls out. public policy polling. 15-point spread. romney 45 santorum 30. and arg has cut romney at 44 santorum at 30. gingrich and paul just really trailing. here is what it looks like in illinois. first of all the facts are that the unemployment rate is much higher than the national average, a full point. 54 delegates are up for grabs. santorum goofed up again in terms of getting on congressional districts. he did not get on four constructional districts. mccain won the 2008 gop primary against romney. in fact romney dropped out of the race just two days later. now they are outspent santorum seven to one. so let's fine out what is going on with the candidate's ground game in illinois. for that we're going to go to chicago, my favorite core upon independent, david shuster is with us. give us our famous lay of the land in chicago. >> great to be with you as always. mitt romney started thi
contests. front runners mitt romney and rick santorum were making last minute pitches to voters. instead of listening to them we are going to go right here to talk about this georgia primary. as we can see, gingrich is up significantly over romney. not going to be a whole lot of surprise if in fact that turns out to be the case. in ohio we have got romney up just one point over santorum according to public policy polling. we have a delegate count, 203 to 92 to 33 to 25. but all of these delegates tomorrow are proportionately given. after tomorrow it's not like people are going to go away. it is, in fact, was going to continue on. and we are joined right here by chris lahane and susan kennedy. chris and susan are these two fantastic -- notice they have blue cups tonight. they are democratic operatives although susan is an independent, i would say. need a purple cup. you started out as a democrat. >> the show. >> susan was the chief of staff for former governor arnold schwarzenegger. chris lahane has worked on a gajillion campaigns, top to bottom.

and in massachusetts. and, no surprise here, but mitt romney is the projected winner of his home state of massachusetts, where he served as governor. mitt romney, the projected winner in massachusetts. in the great state of oklahoma, the race is at this hour too early to call, but nbc news can tell thank you rick santorum has a lead in oklahoma but too early to call there. in tennessee, the race is also too early to call. recapping the press of the state oh oat rest of the states, in ohio, too close to call. in georgia, newt gingrich won the primary in his home state. in virginia, mitt romney won a two-man race over ron paul, mr. gingrich and mr. santorum were not on the ballot in virginia. in vermont, mitt romney is the projected winner of the vermont republican primary. and i should tell you the caucuses are underway in north dakota. we have no characterization from north dakota, we don't expect one for some time. here is where the race stands right now. mitt romney's win in massachusetts is his tenth victory of the campaign. you can see his wins marked in green. mr. santorums in purple, mr. gingrich

we will watch tennessee, oklahoma, massachusetts, get ready for this. another win for mitt romney. look at this. his home state of massachusetts, citizen now projects based on the exit polling information, mitt romney, the former governor of massachusetts, wins in massachusetts. massachusetts, 38 delegates at stake. we also project his win in massachusetts, his home state will be larger than newt gingrich's win in georgia. newt gingrich's home state. we are not yet able to make a projection in oklahoma. we are not yet able to make a projection in tennessee, but we can share with you the exit poll information we have on all three of these states. let's start in oklahoma. first, early exit polls in oklahoma, what people told us as they emerged from the polling booths. in oklahoma, a key state on this evening, these are the exit poll results, look at this. 38% for rick santorum, good news for santorum, 25% for mitt romney, 24% for newt gingrich, 12% in the exit poll for ron paul. let's look at tennessee. these are the exit poll results in tennessee, important numbers, once again, san
